What is a landing craft?

Landing craft were developed by the army to allow military personnel and equipment to be dropped off on beaches. Does that make you think of WW2? That’s when the very first landing craft were used. LCU landing craft are flat-bottomed vessels with a wide ramp at the front. Marines and equipment are still transported by landing craft today.

Landing craft vehicle personnel (LCVP)

Today, landing craft are used to transport people and equipment, often by the fire service or an LCVP fleet. ‘P’ in LCVP stands for ‘personnel’. An LCVP is smaller in size but with the same design – a landing craft with a large ramp at the bow. The ramp can be lowered to enable easy access to the vessel. This can be useful in situations where mobile equipment needs to be moved onto and off the vessel without a crane.

What is a RoRo vessel?

RoRo means ‘Roll-on Roll-off’. A RoRo vessel is a boat onto/from which vehicles, including cars, quads, cranes and cherry pickers, can drive on and off. This can be from a paved wharf or ferry slip, or from less accessible locations, such as a dyke or beach. Landing craft as a mobile work platform

Landing craft are not only used to move people and goods, but can also be used as a mobile work platform on open water – to launch an underwater drone, for example, or to perform underwater inspections. Or even to support a diving team. Our fleet comprises landing craft made from aluminium and HDPE boats. These landing craft vary in length from seven to ten metres. Our equipment is periodically inspected and maintained, and our skippers are regularly retrained. Our vessels are also comprehensively insured with hull and P&I insurance. Please note that equipment and skipper requirements may vary by location. Merely holding a sailing licence does not mean that you can sail just anywhere and with any vessel.
